Online Career Resources
Career-oriented students are thirsty for knowledge, and they are technologically savvy enough to look for it at their keyboards. The trouble is, in the process, they find so much information-and misinformation-on the World Wide Web that the initial challenge becomes even greater. Students need to find the most current, accurate, and targeted career information, without wasting time or being misled. They need their teachers to direct them as to where they can go online to get reliable information on how to pursue their chosen careers.
This was the primary concern when putting together the Career Resources sections of the recently renovated Glencoe Online Learning Center (www.glencoe.com). Each FACS program's Online Learning Center has a Career Resources section that includes at least three components:
- Career Appendix This eight-page guide to the fundamentals takes students through all of the necessary elements of establishing a career, from choosing a field to starting a new job.
- Career City Highlights of this easy-to-navigate Web site include self-assessment inventories and quizzes and detailed tips on creating resumes and cover letters, as well as a list of commonly asked interview questions.
- Career Clusters The Career Clusters Series Web site introduces students to the range of careers available in today's world of work, including the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed, and relevant trends and technologies. The 16 clusters that group together similar occupations and industries were developed by the U.S. Department of Education.
Additional resources that are FACS program-specific, such as lists of carefully screened and approved Web site links and more information about targeted career choices, are also available on the Glencoe Online Learning Center. Visit www.glencoe.com for immediate access to many of these and the above features.
